ESSE Bursaries for 2015

In 2015, ESSE will again offer TWO types of travel bursaries:

  • Type A: a number of bursaries of up to 1500 euros each will be available for scholars in need of support to pursue a project or programme of research leading to the writing of their PhD dissertation.
  • Type B: a number of bursaries of up to 1500 euros each will be available for scholars already holding a doctorate or its equivalent.

A Practical Approach to Subtitling – Workshop

23-26 March 2015, New Bulgarian University, Sofia

This workshop offers an overview of the different types of translation that take place in the audiovisual world, including accessibility to the media (i.e. subtitling for the deaf and the hard-of-hearing and audio description for the blind and the partially sighted), and centres on subtitling. A definition of this professional practice is offered as well as a survey of the different types of subtitles in existence. The semiotics of subtitling will be discussed and participants will learn about some of the issues that constraint this particular form of translation.

The course (16 academic hours, 4 hours a day, mornings 09.30-13.00, one 20-min break) is targeted at students and teachers of translation as well professional translators wishing to explore a new skill.

  • General Introduction to Audiovisual Translation
  • Spatial and temporal constraints in subtitling
  • Technological dimension of subtitling
  • Subtitling for the Deaf and the Hard-of-Hearing (SDH)
  • The subtitling market and future developments

The application deadline is 16th February 2015.

We are pleased to announce “International Conference on Language, Literature, and Culture B/OrdersUnbound: Transgressing the Limit in Arts and Humanities 7-8 May 2015″ jointly hosted by Cankaya University and Suleyman Demirel University. This International Conference is an annual academic event organized by Cankaya University in Ankara. This year it will be organized jointly and will be hosted by Suleyman Demirel University (Isparta, Turkey). This two-day conference seeks to bring researchers, scholars and students from all areas of language, literature, culture and other related disciplines together at Suleyman Demirel University in Isparta. You may participate as panel organizer, presenter of one paper, chair a session or observer. A 300-word abstract for a 20-minute paper should be submitted as an email attachment to suleozun@sdu.edu.tr.  Read more
