30 Years of English @ PU

Spotlight on Translation

д-р Людмила Костова (“Acts of Intercultural and Interlingual Mediation in Lady Mary Wortley Montagu’s Turkish Embassy Letters”, 27.10.2021); проф. д.ф.н.

While travel and mobility have long been perceived as quintessentially human activities and have been particularly associated with voluntary, literate travellers recording their own experiences, the terms can also be applied to animals and involuntary migrants. Irrespective of whether they are voluntary or involuntary, travel and mobility can be placed under different headings and linked to a variety of other concepts, such as displacement, migration, exile, border crossing, dispersal, cultural/economic transfer and communication. Moreover, they have different meanings and call up diverse associations in different historical and cultural contexts.

We invite contributions from scholars in the humanities and social scientists with an interest in the study of travel and mobility. We welcome articles from both established professionals and advanced PhD students.

Topics of discussion may include, but are not restricted to:

new directions in research on travel and mobility;

writing travel and mobility;

teaching travel and mobility;

virtual travel;

travel and communication/mediation;

agents of communication/mediation;

utopian/dystopian travel;

travel, mobility and the politics of place;

mobility and nomadism;

cosmopolitanism, travel and mobility.

Glavanakova, Alexandra. Transcultural Imaginings. Translating the Other, Translating the Self in Narratives about Migration and Terrorism. Sofia: KX – Critique and Humanism Publishing House, 2016. 250 pages. ISBN: 978-954-587-201-3.

Transcultural Imaginings. Translating the Other, Translating the Self in Narratives about Migration and Terrorism

Transcultural Imaginings. Translating the Other, Translating the Self in Narratives about Migration and Terrorism offers an analysis of the multifarious manifestations of Otherness, which, though seemingly dichotomous, actually form a complex network of oppositions and interactions. The book explores the transcultural visions of American, Bulgarian, Canadian, French, and Pakistani writers expressing the complexities of cultural transformations in these liquid times. Encountering others within the context of facts and fictions about migration and terrorism, and from the perspective of transculturalism, cultural translation, and Julia Kristeva’s psychoanalytic reading of alterity, allows for the recognition and the acceptance of the Other within.

14 – 15 November 2014 – University of Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria

The importance, in human civilization, of comparative work and interaction with other cultures can hardly be exaggerated. Significantly, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a seminal figure in European Enlightenment thought, links encounters with new objects and the making of comparisons to the improvement of human understanding of both self and others. Our present condition of globalization impels us to make comparisons constantly insofar as we incessantly encounter novelties. In other words, nowadays most of us are comparatists. The ubiquity of cultural interaction and comparative work may explain the renewed focus on intercultural and comparative studies in the humanities and interpretative social sciences over the last 20 years or so.

At the same time, comparative work is beset by problems, mostly to do with methodology. How do we define the act of comparison? How do we envision the grounds of comparison? What pitfalls are implicit in the overfamiliar statement: “you can only compare that which is comparable”?

Those and other issues were addressed by the interdisciplinary seminar Comparative Studies in the Age of Globalization, held at the University of Veliko Turnovo on 14-15 November 2014. The seminar brought together about 30 participants from the host institution, the University of Sofia, and universities in the US and Turkey. Prof. Alexander Shurbanov, University of Sofia, gave the keynote address which focused on Shakespeare’s jubilees in Bulgaria (1939-1964), thus alerting us to the significance of reception studies within the broader context of comparative literature. The multifaceted issue of literary reception was also central to Prof. Tatyana Stoicheva’s talk “The anticipated English reception of The Shade of the Balkans (1904) as regards Pencho Slaveikov’s paratexts.”

Other topics included the “worlding” of literature and its links to migration and globalization (Ludmilla Kostova), “bodies in transit across the Mediterranean” (Megan MacDonald), issues of identity and transnationalism (Barbara Hussey, Petya Tsoneva), and national stereotypes (Boryana Bratanova).

The full programme can be downloaded in PDF here.

BORDERS AND CROSSINGS/SEUILS ET TRAVERSES: INTERNATIONAL AND MULTIDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE ON TRAVEL WRITING

11 – 13 September 2014 – Bolyarski Hotel, Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria

The Department of English and American Studies, Veliko Turnovo University, Bulgaria, the Centre for Transnational and Transcultural Research (CTTR), University of Wolverhampton, UK, and the Bulgarian Society for British Studies had the pleasure of co-organising the 11th Borders & Crossings/Seuils et traverses International and Multidisciplinary Conference on Travel Writing. The conference was held at the Bolyarski Hotel, VelikoTurnovo, on 11-13 September 2014. The Borders & Crossings conference series began at Magee College, Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1998, and has since visited 7 countries on 11 occasions in its 16-year history, Bulgaria’s medieval capital of Veliko Turnovo being its first venue in Eastern Europe.

The 11th Borders & Crossings Conference brought together over 40 delegates from Albania, Bulgaria, Finland, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, the UK, and the USA. Charles Forsdick, James Barrow Professor of French at the University of Liverpool, gave the keynote lecture, “Travel Writing and the Senses.” Forsdick challenged the privileged position of the visual in travel writing and its critical evaluations. He argued that our understanding of travel writing could be greatly enhanced if we approached texts “in the light of a range of the senses, supplementing exploration of the gaze with recognition of soundscapes and smellscapes, and also actively factoring in gustatory and haptic elements.” To explore the implications of his theoretical observations, Forsdick focused, in the concluding section of his talk, on a corpus of travelogues by blind and visually impaired travellers, thus bringing together travel writing and disability studies.

Complementing the keynote address, a special panel entitled “Keywords in Travel,” with papers by Forsdick (“Travel”), Zoe Kinsley (“Margins”), and Kate Walchester (“Motivations”), gave a glimpse of their jointly edited volume in progress, Travel Writing: 100 Key Words, to be published by Anthem Press in 2015.

Two panels (“Eating the Other” I & II) explored questions of food, food tourism, and celebrity cookbooks.

Despite the recent increase in scholarly activity regarding travel writing and the accompanying proliferation of publications relating to the form, its ethical dimensions have yet to be theorized with sufficient rigor.

Drawing from the disciplines of anthropology, linguistics, literary studies and modern languages, the contributors in this volume apply themselves to a number of key theoretical questions pertaining to travel writing and ethics, ranging from travel-as-commoditization to encounters with minority languages under threat. Taken collectively, the essays assess key critical legacies from parallel disciplines to the debate so far, such as anthropological theory and postcolonial criticism. Also considered, and of equal significance, are the ethical implications of the form’s parallel genres of writing, such as ethnography and journalism. As some of the contributors argue, innovations in these genres have important implications for the act of theorizing travel writing itself and the mode and spirit in which it continues to be conducted. In the light of such innovations, how might ethical theory maintain its critical edge?
